FBI Investigation Reportedly Centered On Watkins
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - According to a published report, embattled Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins could be the subject of an FBI investigation. Watkins was held in contempt last week after refusing to answer allegations that he did a favor for a friend and campaign donor.
A publication called The Texas Lawbook said that the FBI has "opened an active federal criminal investigation into the D.A."
Watkins refused to testify during the trial of oil heir Al Hill III, the grandson of the legendary H.L. Hunt. Hill was accused of mortgage fraud, but the case was dismissed by Judge Lena Lavario after the district attorney refused to answer any questions about the indictment against Hill. Watkins was found to be in contempt of the court and, the following day, his attorney appealed that decision.
The Texas Lawbook -- a publication for business lawyers and legal journalists -- has explained that "lawyers with knowledge of the inquiry describe the federal investigation as extremely serious." The report said that the FBI investigation focuses on the district attorney's decision to seek criminal mortgage fraud charges against Hill in 2010.
Hill's attorneys have accused the district attorney of prosecutorial misconduct.
