HIGHLAND VILLAGE (CBSDFW.COM) - Friends and family are calling the death of Jay Hunsucker, 44, a holiday tragedy.

The father of three died Friday after falling 22 feet through the floor of his attic. A former all-state, scholarship athlete, Hunsucker was retrieving Christmas decorations for the holidays.

"He was going to drag them down to put them up the next day. The rest of it, is a mystery," said Hunsucker's childhood friend and neighbor, Hudson Floyd. "I can't fathom it. I can't think of the process and what happened there. No one can."

Floyd said the attic has walkways and plywood for storage and that Hunsucker knew where to stand and where not to. "I think he just lost his balance, he tripped and he fell," he said.

Hunsucker's fall was no small distance either. He fell through the ceiling over his home's entrance and landed onto the tile 22-feet below.

"The county examiner's office [said] basically the cause of death was massive internal injuries," said Floyd.

Hunsucker's wife and one of his daughters were home when the accident happened. Parishioners from Hunsuckers church have rallied around his family during their time of mourning.

"Day by day. Piece by piece," said Floyd. "Trying to help his wife and his daughters do the same… It's tough."

Hunsucker died in the ambulance on the way to a medical helicopter that landed a few miles from the home.
