Fast-Moving Storms Rip Through North Texas
DALLAS/FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A line of fast-moving thunderstorms ripped across North Texas Sunday morning, prompting weather warnings and causing power outages and brief flash flooding.
There were no reports of widespread damage, but the National Weather Service reported a house near Luella in Grayson County suffered major damage, and in Sachse, lightning may have been to blame for a fire that destroyed a house there.
Electricity provider Oncor reported at least 15,000 customers without power across the region after the storms moved through.
The CBS 11 storm team kept an eye on the weather through the night as it tracked from west to east across the area.
"The storms did produce several reports of 60-plus mile-per-hour winds and even some smaller hail," said CBS 11 Meteorologist Jeff Jamsion. "The fast-moving storms did bring some beneficial rainfall, despite the noisy thunder and bright lightning that probably rattled many North Texans out of bed."
Local police agencies reported curb-high water in some places and the City of Dallas alerted residents to high water problems off Walnut Hill Lane and off Tantor Street in Northwest Dallas.
In Sachse firefighters were investigating whether lightning caused a fire around 4 a.m. this morning in the 6000 block of Lakecrest Drive. The home was destroyed by the flames. No one was home, and there were no injuries.
In Arlington, police blamed the weather for contributing to a major accident involving seven vehicles that shut down eastbound Interstate 20 near Kelly Elliot for a period of time. No one was seriously hurt.
