Fascinating Alternate Theory for Dirk Sitting
Mark Cuban has an axe to grind here.
I present to you, the angle on the Dirk Nowitzki story that has been unreported. You are familiar with the two boring surface level story lines being distributed.
A-Whoa that Dirk Nowitzki should be ashamed of himself for being out of shape.
Or
B- Dirk is done. He left everything on the court last spring, and it was the last ounce of mvp level ball he had left in him.
Both stories are possibly and one is likely, but not nearly as fascinating as this G-Bag exclusive.
Allow me to offer...
C-Mark Cuban is using Dirk's lack of fitness to promote his campaign to take nba players out of international play, or at least convince the nba to insist on the player's home country reimbursing the NBA franchise for their players services.
The fact that Dirk has been slow out of the gates is not a valid reason to sit him down. Every team is dealing with at least one of these situations.
Lamar Odom has shown signs of physical and mental fatigue too! Multiple 105.3 The Fan shows even talked about the idea of the Mavs giving him a week off to recharge his batteries. He soldiered on.
Why does he play and Dirk is sitting? Benching Lamar Odom for a week can't be used by Mark Cuban as exhibit A in his case against NBA players in the Olympics without compensation back to the association.
"It's just the epitome of stupidity that we would allow ourselves to be used so other corporations can make tens, if not hundreds of millions of dollars," Cuban said.
"There's some guys sitting at the Olympic headquarters going, 'Those dumb-asses, we're taking all their best guys for nothing.' "
"The commissioner's office won't open it up to discussion. They just make a unilateral call, they'll take calls about it, but won't put it up for a vote. Hopefully, I can get him to move it to a vote at some point."
Ah yes. And what better way to get that vote than showing the commissioner you had to sit down your superstar in a superstar's league? And the empty seats? Extrapolate that out, paint a worst case scenario, and Cubes should have himself a sweet billion dollar power point to bust out at the next owner's meeting.
If you are thinking Cuban would never sit Dirk just to make a point, you are right. Fans would kill him for that. You pay good money to go watch him hoop. But he would sit Dirk just to make a point if you could also make a valid case that it's needed, and it won't hurt their record too much because your schedule is super cake this week.
For the record, I love Cuban's position. Sports have become too big of a business. The gym was sold out last night, but 40 percent of the paying customers elected to stay home.
Mark Cuban is about his money first and foremost. After that, he loves to shake up the world and change the way it operates.
By the way, lemme take a quick shot or two because I am the GBAG General.
No surprise that once again I am the first to bring the goods on this story. In DFW, the Cowboys media is rabid and unforgiving, but the Mavericks media is often asleep at the wheel, too concerned with sucking up to the team and or going with the flow.
