Farmers Branch To Appeal Housing Ruling
FARMERS BRANCH (AP) - Leaders of a Dallas suburb have voted to appeal a ruling that overturned a ban on renting apartments to immigrants in the country illegally.
The Farmers Branch City Council voted 3-2 late Tuesday night to appeal the ruling by the full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to the Supreme Court.
The appeals court on July 22 struck down the ordinance as unconstitutional and an encroachment on federal authority.
The ordinance passed in 2008 would require all renters in the city of nearly 30,000 residents to obtain city licenses. It also would require a city official to deny licenses to anyone found in the U.S. illegally.
Farmers Branch is one of several U.S. cities targeting unlawful immigration by enacting renting restrictions.
