We all know most Christmas songs as well as we know Dasher and Dancer,

But when Dallas resident Randy Brooks wrote his hit Christmas tune, little did he know it would be a classic.  The song we are talking about is "Grandma Got Run Over by A Reindeer" which he wrote for fun in 1978.

"I sat down with my guitar and thought how would Grandma die at Christmas time.  Thinking that it would be a good song to sing in a bar in Dallas, and that was my only hope for the song that people would laugh in the bar" said songwriter Randy Brooks.

Elmo & Patsy, who recorded the song, and Randy laughed all the way to the bank as the song hit the charts and radio stations all over the country in 1979.

"When Gene Nelson, the disc jockey in San Francisco, first put it on the air the phones at the radio station rang off the hook with people saying 'don't ever play that song again'.  Luckily enough people said 'do play that song again' that it took off" Brooks laughed.
