Family Seeks Help To Solve Deadly Hit-And-Run
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A North Texas family is asking for help from the public. They want to know who committed the hit-and-run wreck that killed their deaf and mute relative, who was 71.
Domenica Sciortino has spent decades in the back room of Cercone's Model Tailors sewing room hemming, making and altering clothing for thousands of clients.
Since 1962, Raymond Thomason would work in the same room, spending years helping Sciortino with small chores. "He was deaf and mute, but we communicated," Sciortino reminisced.
Thomason died in January. While walking from his Upper Greenville bus stop near University Boulevard, a driver hit the 71-year old man, then sped away.
Thomason died the following day. Since then, Dallas Police have found few clues tying any suspects to the hit and run death. Sciortino says she still can't understand why anyone would fail to render aid to an aging man. "Why not stop? Even an animal, you stop to help. Imagine a person," she said.
Those who work and live in the northeast Dallas area near the tailor shop would often see Thomason walking daily. "He came here every day," Nickie Molaire, of Rusty Taco said.
Molaire expressed surprise that no arrests had been made in connection with the January 20 hit and run. "Was not more done because he wasn't important? A deaf mute. Was it overlooked?" she asked.
Dallas Police detective J.P. Thompson said the case offered few clues. "Witnesses identified a dark car, possibly a four-door Honda," he said. But since the incident, the trail has run dry. Some people in the area wondered what happened to the man who waved at them, but never uttered a word.
"He was a nice man, a sweet man," Sciortino said, while holding back tears. "He should not have died this way."
Police have urged citizens to contact DPD if they have any information about the person responsible for the hit and run.
