Family Gets $400,000 Over Dallas Jail Death
DALLAS (AP) - A federal jury has ordered Dallas County to pay $400,000 to the family of a homeless man who died in jail after being booked on a public lewdness charge.
Jurors determined that the civil rights of Craig Morris were violated because county policies made officials indifferent to the welfare of inmates. The verdict Monday came more than four years after Morris died of a severe pneumonia while in custody.
The Dallas Morning News reported that the county is expected to appeal. County attorneys had argued to jurors that Morris probably would have died in the streets if he wasn't in custody.
In 2007, the lack of a proper jail infirmary partially led to a federal order against the county to improve jail medical care.
