Fake Firefighter Steals From Fort Worth Hotel

FORT WORTH (KRLD) - A man claiming to be a former firefighter walked into and out of a Fort Worth motel -- with money that wasn't his own. That's right, the thief posed as a first responder to commit a theft.
It was August 3 when the man walked into the Quality Inn on Gemini Place and told the clerk that he had spent 17 years as a Fort Worth firefighter and was now a fire system inspector.
"He used that guise to have access to the front office, where he did show some knowledge of the fire system and the fire control panel," explained Fort Worth Police Sergeant Marc Povero.
Sgt. Povero said the fake fireman made his move after he asked the motel clerk to go to another part of the room and set off the fire alarm off.
"When the clerk left the front office, the man actually stole $460 in cash from the register," said Sgt. Povero. "When the clerk returned, unaware of what had appened, the man said he had to go to his vehicle to retrieve some tools. And when he did, he left the scene."
The clerk discovered the money missing soon thereafter.
The Fort Worth Fire Department is asking that anyone who recognizes the man and knows some thing about the theft to call 817-392-4622.
