FAA Seeks Fine Against Southwest Airlines
DALLAS (AP) - Federal officials are seeking a $325,000 penalty against Southwest Airlines Co. over a faulty repair job on an AirTran jet in 2011.
The Federal Aviation Administration on Monday said the company operated a Boeing 717 on 1,140 flights after maintenance workers improperly installed a switch designed to let pilots test the windshield heating system, which is used to prevent ice buildup.
Dallas-based Southwest, which bought AirTran in 2011, has 30 days to respond.
Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King says the installation error didn't compromise safety because it was an extra system. The primary system for alerting crews to a potential window-heater malfunction was still working. The mistake was immediately fixed upon discovery.
