Exterior Portions Of Astrodome Set For Demolition

HOUSTON (AP) — The transformation of Houston's Astrodome begins next week when work crews prepare to demolish exterior portions of the landmark stadium.

The Houston Chronicle reports the effort is part of an $8 million package approved in August by Harris County commissioners for work that must be done ahead of any decision to raze or repurpose the dilapidated stadium.

Crews will begin removing ticket booths, exterior walkway towers, substations and performing other work that includes asbestos abatement. Plans call for the demolition to conclude by June and will be stopped during Texans football games at nearby Reliant Stadium and for other events.

Voters in November will decide whether to approve authorizing up to $217 million in bonds to turn the stadium into a giant convention center and exhibition space.
