Expert: TCU Bust Sign Of Increased Pot Problem In NCAA

FORT WORTH (AP) - A drug-testing expert says the marijuana bust at TCU this week is symbolic of a growing problem in college athletics.

National Center for Drug Free Sport vice president Andrea Wickerham said Thursday that the arrests of four football players on suspicion of selling marijuana and reports of multiple positive tests for pot should get administrators' attention. She said TCU is not an "isolated incident.''

The NCAA recently reported that 22.6 percent of some 25,000 student-athletes in an anonymous survey in 2009 admitted to using marijuana the previous 12 months. That was up from 21.2 percent in 2005.

The NCAA also reports a sharp rise in positive tests for pot at championship events and football bowl games.
