Expect Traffic Backups With Weekend LBJ Closure
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Commuters traveling along Interstate-635/LBJ Freeway Friday afternoon better enjoy the ride, because one stretch of the loop won't be open much longer.
Friday night construction crews will begin installing beams between Marsh Lane and Midway Road and that means parts of I-635, both east and westbound, will be shut down.
Construction of the LBJ Express project has definitely constricted traffic and the squeeze is about to get tighter.
Each day some 240,000 drivers make their way along the ever-changing LBJ Freeway, between Interstate-35 and 75/Central Expressway. The four-year redevelopment and expansion project for I-635 is in year three and tonight drivers heading westbound will run into one big stop sign.
"One of the things we have to do is move traffic off the main lanes, in order to hang those beams. So traffic will be moved off main lanes onto the frontage road," said Andy Rittler, Corporate Affairs Director with the LBJ Infrastructure Group LLC, "So drivers can expect a bit more of a delay in their commute this evening."
Beginning at 9 p.m. west LBJ will shutdown completely, from Midway to Marsh. The section will reopen for a few hours Saturday morning, but at 7 p.m. will close again until Noon Sunday.
Traffic won't be any smoother for drivers trying to travel east. During that same timespan this weekend the two left lanes of eastbound LBJ, between Marsh and Midway, will be closed.
Naturally, travelers should expect huge backups.
After the weekend closures, big changes happen Monday. The new three-lane configuration will be implements on June 3. That means there will be alternating closures of the two right lanes, as well as entrance and exit ramps, between the Dallas North Tollway and Webb Chapel.
