Expansion Brings More Riders To DART Rail Lines

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas Area Rapid Transit had more riders in 2011 than ever before. Rail service is seeing a boost in ridership thanks to the opening of an additional rail line in Dallas. DART officials said that the Green Line's opening in the West End in late 2010 helped make last year the busiest ever.

Riders took more than 22 million trips on DART rail lines in 2011, despite rising fares. And while rail service was increasing, other forms of transportation saw declines in ridership. There was about a four percent drop in the number of bus riders last year, though it is still the most used mode of DART transportation, providing 37.2 million trips in 2011.

But as more rail lines continue to open, DART hopes to make buses supplemental to their expanding rail system. DART is expected to open another new rail line later this year. The Orange Line will provide service to Irving.
