Ex-Texas A&M Running Back Sentenced For Dallas Area Robberies
DALLAS, Texas (AP) - Texas A&M's all-time leading rusher has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for a series of armed robberies in the Dallas area.
Federal prosecutors say 45-year-old Darren Lewis was sentenced Thursday for his role in the robberies of two hotels in suburban Dallas in late 2012 and a convenience store in Dallas in January 2013.
Lewis in May pleaded guilty to charges that include brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. An accomplice in the robberies, Christopher Washington, has pleaded guilty to similar charges and will be sentenced later.
The running back known as "Tank" rushed for 5,012 yards while at Texas A&M from 1987-1990. Lewis led the Aggies in rushing for three straight seasons. He was drafted in 1991 by the Chicago Bears.
