Former Mesquite ISD coach arrested on child grooming charges
NORTH TEXAS – Police have arrested a former Mesquite ISD coach on felony charges of child grooming.
Sergio Gonzalez, who was hired by the district in 2004 and worked at A.C. New Middle School in Balch Springs, was taken into custody at his residence at about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Mesquite ISD alerted the Balch Springs Police Department about a potentially inappropriate relationship between Gonzalez and a former student at the middle school.
Following this notification, Balch Springs detectives, in collaboration with a Texas DPS task force and Forney police, arrested Gonzalez on charges related to the third-degree felony.
The school district placed the longtime educator on administrative leave before he resigned and reported him to the State Board for Educator Certification.
"To protect the student's privacy and ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we are not able to share any additional details," Mesquite ISD said in a statement. "Our commitment is to provide a nurturing environment where every student feels safe, respected, and empowered to pursue excellence. Anything less than that is unacceptable."
Gonzalez is being held at Balch Springs City Jail, awaiting transfer to Dallas County Jail.
