Event Prepares Tarrant County Students For Class
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Thousands of students in Fort Worth will get back in the school spirit on Wednesday morning at the annual Tarrant County Back to School Roundup event, where local families can get everything they need to start the upcoming school year for free. The doors open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 2:00 p.m. at the Will Rogers Memorial Center.
In just one stop, qualifying Tarrant County students who are in need will receive all sorts of classroom necessities to help them be prepared for the first day of school later this month. But, keep in mind, the event is only open to eligible families who have already pre-registered for the free benefits. Nobody will be able to walk in and register on Wednesday.
And the roundup is about more than just school supplies. Families and students can also take advantage of free health screenings, haircuts, vision checks and immunizations.
According to the 2011 census, about 1 in 5 children in Tarrant County lives in poverty. Around 10,000 free school supplies were given away during last year's roundup event. In all, there are 20 different school districts in Tarrant County that have students who will benefit from the free goods and services being offered.
Temperatures on Wednesday are expected to reach into the triple digits again. With thousands of people expected to attend the Fort Worth event -- many of them having to wait in long lines -- paramedics and volunteers will be on hand in case of heat-related emergencies. Water stations and tents will also be set up for visitors to take breaks in the shade.
