COLLEGE STATION (AP) — The European Parliament has decorated former U.S. President George H.W. Bush as part of events to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Bush was in office when the wall was toppled in 1989. On Monday, he became the first American to receive the Robert Schuman Medal during a ceremony at his presidential library at Texas A&M University in College Station.

The school says the award marked the 90-year-old former president's commitment to a secure, peaceful Europe. The honor was established in 1986 to recognize leaders who have advanced the cause of peace and human values. Other recipients have included St. John Paul II.

The award is named after former French foreign minister and prime minister Robert Schuman, considered a founder of the European Union.
