Euless Police Officer Laid To Rest In New York

NEW YORK CITY (CBSDFW.COM) - The scene of countless police officer funerals throughout the years, hundreds of people gathered at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan Monday to honor Euless officer David Hofer.
The funeral held Monday was not for an officer killed in New York City but instead for a native son who left for a life in Texas that he thought would be safer. Friends say he wanted a change from big city policing—and was drawn to the slow pace and open spaces synonymous with Texas.
"You can see by the showing up here of officers that he was a great man and an awesome police officer and we are going to honor him again today up here," says Ofc. Brian Brennan of the Euless Police Department.
The clap of mounted patrols broke the silence along Manhattan's 5th Avenue on Monday morning.
Streets were blocked and hundreds of New York City Police officers filled the streets around St. Patrick's Cathedral to honor Hofer.
The Euless Police officer was shot and killed last week but he was born in Brooklyn and spent the first five years of his career with NYPD.
A delegation of 60 Euless Police Officers traveled to New York for the service and say the city's show of support for their former officer was humbling.
Citizens gathered around the historic church to watch the emotional display of support from officers all over the state.
Also Monday, officers from Euless visited the Ninth Precinct where Hofer worked and met with the officers who remembered him as kind but brave.
