EULESS (CBS11) — A fire at a Mid-Cities apartment complex displaced 30 residents Saturday.

The fire broke out at The Palisades at Bear Creek in Euless shortly after 6 a.m., according to residents.

Fuzlul Chowdhury said had his wife not looked out their bedroom window and saw the flames, he's not sure if they would have made it out alive.

He said his family was asleep, and his smoke detector never went off.

"Nothing was working," he said. "That's the disaster."

Other residents also said their smoke detectors did not go off to warn them of the fire. The management at The Palisades at Bear Creek told CBS 11 News "new smoke detectors were recently installed."

Not knowing if his neighbors were aware of the early morning fire, Chowdhury said he knocked on his neighbors' doors, screaming "fire, fire, fire."

However, when he tried to go upstairs to apartment #202, the flames blocked the stairs.

Chowdhury said moments later, Euless firefighters arrived just in time and rescued the family of four in apartment #202 off their second-story balcony.

Nine people suffered minor injuries. Four units were destroyed while several others were damaged.
