English Opera Coming To Fort Worth Festival
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A different kind of opera is coming to Fort Worth. It is performed entirely in English, and tells the story of an American who was the longest held prisoner of the Vietnam War. "This is going to be one of the highlights of my artistic life," said Tom Cipullo, who composed "Glory Denied."
This is Cipullo's first opera. It will show in North Texas for the first time during the Fort Worth Opera Festival in April and May. The opera is based on a book of the same name, and tells the true story of America's longest-held prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. It is a tale from recent times that stood out to Cipullo, and he hopes that it will resonate with audiences, too.
"It will tell them somthing about the most interesting period I've ever lived through, which is the '60s and the '70s," Cipullo said.
The performance consists of just four actors who portray the older and younger versions of the Colonel who was captured and the older and younger versions of his wife. Michael Mayes is the lead actor in "Glory Denied."
"Music has the ability to focus and amplify your emotions," Cipullo said. With an opera that is all in English, the composer hopes that both new and old opera fans will walk away feeling touched.
