Electric Company Warning: Beware Of Fake Utility Workers

NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Oncor Electric is warning customers through social media of thieves posing as employees. The fake workers have been reported in towns across North Texas -- from Mesquite to Midland.
Customers immediately began posting their stories online about the scammers either knocking on their door or calling on the phone.
Resident Tony Vaughn posted on Oncor's Facebook page, "YupT they ask to see your bill to 'make sure' you're getting the lowest rate possible." The imposter was likely trying to steal personal information.
Sondra VanWay Stone wrote in a post that she got a call from a lady who said she was from TXU and was at the outside pole, ready to disconnect the electricity for non-payment. Usually, scammers, in person or on the phone, will try to get the customer to give up financial information like credit card numbers.
One Arlington resident described how she had to physically escort a woman, claiming to be with the electric company, off of her property.
The biggest thing customers need to know is that companies like Oncor and TXU don't physically collect payments or disconnect power. Contractors perform those tasks.
A company representative also explained that no Oncor employee would ever stop by your home to collect a payment or contact you by phone to request credit card information.
Any person approached by someone claiming to be a utility worker should always ask for identification. A true worker will be wearing a company uniform and have company ID. Oncor says you can call the company to confirm worker identity at 888-313-6862.
Oncor officials also stressed that their employees do not ever need to enter your home. If someone insists they're from Oncor and must enter your home, don't let them in and call 911 if you fear for your safety.
