SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Public education is emerging as a central issue in the Texas governor's race between Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott and Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis.

Abbott was expected to visit a San Antonio charter school Wednesday as part of a series of classroom visits statewide. Aides say Abbott wants input from teachers and students before unveiling his education platform early next year.

Davis considers education one of her strongest issues. She won support of teachers in 2011 when she temporarily blocked $5.4 billion in funding cuts to public schools with a Senate filibuster.

Davis' campaign has targeted Abbott over his office defending the state in a lawsuit filed by school districts over those cuts. Aides to Abbott say he was doing his job as attorney general.
