Duncanville Cheerleading Squad Helps Special Needs Students

DUNCANVILLE, Texas (1080 KRLD) - A cheerleading squad at Duncanville High School helps special needs students develop.

The smiles on the faces of the Duncanville High School Sparklers light up the room as they practice their cheer and dance routine. They're getting pumped for a big pep rally today where they'll perform right along with the cheerleaders. Sparkler Damian, a junior at Duncanville, says pep rallies are his favorite.

The Sparklers got started at Duncanville High by students about 2 years ago and are part of an even larger organization called Sparkle Effect which integrates special education students into cheerleading, all over the country.

Sparkler squads are made up of special needs students and regular ed students called Sparkler helpers who perform the routines with them at pep rallies and sports games. Sparkler Lauren, a Duncanville sophomore, likes being in front of the crowds.

Sparklers coach and special ed teacher Betsy Thompson says being on the squad helps the students make huge progress and calls them the sweethearts of Duncanville High.

Sparklers perform in the pep rally today and will show their spirit in a performance showcase this weekend.
