Driver Shot Dead After Hitting Richardson Officer
RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - Police in Richardson are investigating a bizarre incident that ended with shots fired by an officer, a car crash, and a woman dead.
Everything began around 8:30 a.m. Monday as officers with the Richardson Police Department worked a traffic detail on Beltline Road.
Richardson police Sgt. Kevin Perlich explained that one woman, suspected of a traffic violation, simply would not stop. "We had an officer there that attempted to get a violator to pull off into a parking lot. That violator failed to follow the officer's direction and continued driving past him."
As the woman, later identified as 31-year-old Emily Krumrei, drove past, the officer took note of the car she was in and then relayed the information by police radio. An officer nearby spotted the car and tried to pull the driver over. "The violator again did not stop and happened to turn down a side street where a third officer, who was working an unrelated traffic accident, observed the motorist and attempted to stop her."
At first it appeared as though Krumrei was finally going to comply, but Perlich said she made a move that ultimately cost her her life. "She initially slowed down as if she were gonna stop and then as she got closer she accelerated toward him and tried to get around him… making contact with him. The officer in fear for his life, fired upon that vehicle."
Arch McKinnon witnessed the incident from his car leasing lot. He said it was clear the woman behind the wheel didn't want to stop for the officer. "He rolled to the side and shot. He gave her every opportunity to stop. I thought she was going to stop. It was that much time. But then, she just gassed it."
"I remember looking at her going I wonder what she's thinking, but it happened so fast," said another witness, Iliana Davila.
The car Krumrei was driving, which police later learned was a loaner from a North Texas Lexus car dealership, continued going a short distance before crashing into a guardrail and stopping along the service road of south Central Expressway.
Krumrei, who was the only person in the car, was taken to Medical City Dallas Hospital where she was pronounced dead. She was a mother of two.
Perlich said as a matter of procedure there would be an internal investigation for, "both administrative purposes as well as criminal purposes."
The officer who fired on Krumrei and was struck by her vehicle was not seriously injured and received no hospital treatment.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
