Driver License Mega Centers To Open In Dallas
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Texas Department of Public Safety opened a new Driver License Mega Center in Pflugerville on Tuesday. Two similar locations are expected to open in the Dallas-Fort Worth area by the end of January 2013.
The mega centers will leverage new technology and allow employees to more quickly and efficiently serve customers.
"This is the first of six high-capacity driver license centers made possible by funding from the Texas Legislature that are designed to relieve congestion in major metropolitan driver license offices," said Public Safety Commission Chair Cynthia Leon in a news release. "The new technology at the mega centers will also allow our customers to reserve a spot in line without stepping foot in the office."
The new queuing system will offer customers the option of reserving a spot in line before going to the office via cell phone, online or using a land line. Customers can also make adjustments to their place in line – for instance, if they are running late, they can push themselves back in line. Self-sevice kiosks will be available to service walk-in customers, who will have the option of returning at a time closer to their appointment.
The 82nd Legislature provided $63 million in funding to DPS to open the six mega centers and purchase the equipment and technology. The mega centers are expected to create opportunities for 266 additional employees.
At nearly 24,000 square feet, the Austin-Pflugerville Mega Center houses 22 customer service stations, 36 employees and is expected to assist over 700 customers a day.
"I am proud that the legislature, with the input of DPS, was able to bring these additional resources to Central Texas," said Texas State Senator Kirk Watson.
Two additional mega centers will be built in Houston; San Antonio will receive one.
