DPS: Cartels Are State's Greatest Crime Threat

AUSTIN (AP) - State public safety officials say Mexican cartels pose the single greatest organized crime threat to Texas.

The Texas Department of Public Safety announced this week findings from this year's Public Safety Threat Overview.

The review says identifies Mexican cartels and prison gangs -- many of which work with cartels -- as the two biggest organized threats to the state.

According to the report, the majority of crimes involving cartel members go unreported. DPS says it believes six major Mexican cartels, including Los Zetas and the Gulf Cartel, are currently operating in the state.

Texas also faces threats from international terrorism, natural disasters and motor vehicle crashes.
