Attempted Robber Dies From Gunshot Wound
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A man who was shot after beating a business owner with a barbell during an attempted robbery Wednesday has died.
Dallas Police Department spokesman Kevin Janse says Willie James Moss, 53, wandered into the A & L Furniture store at 4311 Ross Ave. and struck the owner with a two pound barbell. The owner hurriedly reached into his fanny pack, Janse said, and pulled out a gun.
Moss took a shot to the stomach. Afterward, bystanders flagged down a passing motorcycle officer who called emergency units. Moss was taken to Baylor Medical Center in serious condition and underwent surgery. The owner was taken, too, in good condition.
Moss died from his injury hours after the incident.
The 53-year-old has an extensive criminal record, including four theft charges; five charges of robbery, four of which were aggravated; driving while intoxicated; resisting arrest; and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

A business owner shot and wounded a suspect who hit him with a barbell during an attempted robbery Wednesday, Dallas Police said.
Department spokesman Kevin Janse said the male suspect entered the A & L Furniture Store at 4311 Ross Ave. carrying a pair of two-pound barbells and tried to rob the owner.
Janse said the suspect hit the victim with a weight, but the owner pulled a gun from his fanny-pack and shot the man in the stomach. Bystanders alerted a passing motorcycle cop, who then took the man into custody.
Both individuals were taken to Baylor Hospital; Janse said the owner is in good condition while the suspect is undergoing surgery in serious conditions.
Robbery detectives are investigating and neither individual has been identified –– Janse said he'll release the suspect's name once he's transferred to jail.
