Dozens Of Dolphins Stranded In Texas
GALVESTON (AP) - More than 120 dolphins have turned up stranded in Texas since last fall and researchers are trying to figure out why.
The Houston Chronicle reported Monday that experts are looking at the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, an algae bloom or other unknown causes.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in May ruled that the dolphin deaths qualified as an "unusual mortality event."
Rescue officials say 123 dolphins were stranded from November through March in Galveston, Aransas, Calhoun, Kleberg and Brazoria counties.
Heidi Whitehead with the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network says all but four of the dolphins were dead. Whitehead says the strandings over the five-month period approach the number expected for an entire year.
