Dozens Of Adoptions Save Lives At Overcrowded Animal Shelter
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBS 11 NEWS) - Thanks to CBS 11 viewers, an overcrowded North Texas animal shelter will not be forced to euthanize any dogs and cats.
Prairie Paws Adoption Center in Grand Prairie was overcapacity and had planned to put down animals starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
But plans have changed at the shelter, after 43 dogs and four cats were adopted since the doors opened Wednesday morning.
Tammie and Johnny Law watched CBS 11's story Tuesday night and felt compelled to come take a look at the shelter. They ended up adopting three dogs.
"After seeing that, I couldn't not do it," said Tammie Law.
Johnny said, " I wish I could take them all home. I wish I could take them all."
The Grand Prairie shelter was so packed, some kennels had up to three dogs in them. Prairie Paws started pleading online -- hoping to find some forever families.
The Gouge family also heard the plea and immediately came to help.
"We decided to come and bring one home with us," said Jennifer Gouge – as she rubbed her new family pet on the head. "Everywhere I went, she was watching me through that cage window, and I just couldn't help it. I had to take her out."
Prairie Paws workers are thankful to the families that showed up and saved lives.
"We have extra kennels it makes our lives much easier and a little less stressful. Don't forget, we do fill up again. It's not a one time thing," said Danielle Tate.
The city is offering free adoptions for the larger dogs and older cats -- and half price adoptions for the younger animals.
