Suspected Dallas Check Cashing Robber Dead, Guard Injured
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas police are investigating a double shooting at a check cashing business in Oak Cliff.
Around 9:30 a.m. Friday a 911 call reported a shooting at PL$ Check Cashers, in the 2300 block of West Davis Street.
When officers arrived they found that two people had been shot.
According to police, two guards with Dunbar Armored Services were making a cash delivery to the business. The guards were exiting the truck with the money when a man at a nearby bus stop charged them.
The unknown man fired several times and hit one of the guards. The injured guard then shot the suspect.
"Luckily, the wounded guard was able to return fire, " says Sgt. Warren Mitchell, a Dallas Police spokesperson.
The guard was apparently hit in the shoulder and hand and remains hospitalized in good condition
The shooter/suspected robber was also taken to an area hospital and was pronounced dead just before 10 a.m.
The second armored truck guard was not injured.
Chopper 11 video showed more than a dozen Dallas Police Department patrol cars surrounding the business and an armored truck in the parking lot. The back doors of the armored truck were open.
Police are still investigating, but believe the shooting was part of a pre-planned attempted robbery. They believe the suspect acted alone and are waiting on results of ballistics tests to determine how many rounds were fired-- and by whom.
