NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Trying to save on your energy bills in the heat of summer? These simple DIY tricks can save you up to $500 per year.

Starting with a leaky faucet - that's money down the drain, literally. Fixing it can save you $35 per faucet.

Adam Manning of Berkey's Air Conditioning and Plumbing says fixing leaks can also help lower your water bill. On an average, a leaky faucet wastes approximately 1,600 gallons of water each year.

Lowering your temperature setting on home water heater to 120 degrees can save $30 to $60 per heater.

An average home in North Texas has two water heaters so that's double the savings!

Changing five incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs can put an average of $65 in your wallet per year.

And, simple changes to your laundry routine can save you up to $75 if you use cold water in the washer and remove lint from the dryer after each wash.

Finally, the most money you can save in your house is actually in your shower.

Manning says by reducing the time in the shower by 10 minutes and replacing the head with a low- flow shower head will save you $175.

Another thing to consider: Installing tank less water heater which heat up water on demand saves energy and money. But that could cost you about $5,000 to $6,000 to install.
