DISD Pumps The Brakes On Controversial Transportation Plan
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Vans, taxis and shuttles will no longer take many Dallas students to class. The district is scrapping part of its transportation plan after backlash from parents.
This year, the Dallas Independent School District expanded its plan that uses a private car service to transport some students to school. At the start of the school year, about 2400 students were being transported by the service.
Initially, the private cars and shuttles were not marked, which caused a great safety concern for parents. This week, the district confirmed that all cars would be clearly marked and all drivers would have visible photo ID's.
Now the district has decided to bring back regular school buses for special needs and hearing impaired students. Also, children using cars to attend Harry Stone Montessori will go back to bus service. DISD spokesperson Jon Dahlander estimates five to ten percent of students who had been transported in private cars and taxis would now go back to buses. Those changes start on Monday.
