DISD Board To Decide Superintendent's Fate
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - After months of controversy and an independent investigation, decision day has arrived for Superintendent Mike Miles. The embattled Dallas Independent School District leader will learn Thursday whether or not he gets to keep his job. Miles has been in charge of the district since July of last year.
In that short amount of time, Miles has angered many educators and community leaders with the changes that he is making. The president of the largest area teachers association called for a news conference on Thursday morning to officially ask for his termination. Rena Honea, president of Alliance-AFT said, "Mike Miles never wanted to collaborate with teachers, parents, community members, to roll up his sleeves and work with us to make Dallas ISD schools the best in the country."
The association cites flawed leadership and loss of confidence by employees and community leaders as the reason for wanting Miles to be terminated. They said that he has made too many demands on teachers, required unnecessary paperwork and not consulted with teachers on how to move the district forward. Alliance-AFT represents nearly 8,000 educators in the Dallas school district.
But the organization which represents Hispanic school administrators is not calling for the superintendent to be terminated, saying that his transgressions do not rise to the seriousness of a dismissal. Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings has also been a firm supporter of Miles during this investigation.
Miles was accused of influencing a district contract and then interferring with an investigation into that incident. School board trustees are set to meet on Thursday -- in private -- to talk about the investigation, which found that Miles had violated school district policy and worked to publicly disparage the school board.
School district sources had previously told CBS 11 News that Miles will indeed keep his job.
