DISD Approves $130 Million 'Bridge Plan'

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Some parents in the Dallas Independent School District are celebrating on Friday after the board approved renovations and upgrades to more than a dozen campuses. The vote came in at about 1:00 a.m. and it is exactly what parents have been wanting.
This has been dubbed the Bridge Plan, and it will be paid for using money that the district has set aside in reserves.
More than 20 schools across the district will get nearly $130 million to be used for upgrades, and to expand classrooms including those used for pre-kindergarten children. The district will immediately start planning for the work to begin.
"We know this plan isn't perfect. We know it's just a bridge to a more comprehensive plan that is desperately needed by all of our kids throughout the district," detailed Superintendent Mike Miles. "We designed the Bridge Plan to attack the most severe schools."
One of those campuses is Lakewood Elementary School, which was built in 1951. A gas leak earlier this month forced an evacuation and shut down the school.
Ashley Carroll's two children were inside of the school at the time and ended up getting sick. She is grateful to hear that something is being done. "It's just been a long time coming, and I think something needs to be done," Carroll said. "The building is in desperate need. We are overcrowded. There are so many things that are wrong."
