DHS Setting Up Emergency Shelter In Texas As Undocumented Youths Cross Border Alone
DALLAS, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - There are so many children that are being caught trying to sneak across the U.S. border into Texas that Homeland Security is now calling it a "crisis."
Law enforcement officials in South Texas have been so overwhelmed by a surge of young illegal migrants traveling by themselves that DHS quickly moved to set up an emergency shelter for the youths at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio.
In the past two weeks more than one thousand kids were caught illegally crossing into Texas, and most are not from Mexico...they're from Central America.
Shawn Moran with the "National Border Patrol Council" says it's heartbreaking to see kids in danger.
Young Illegals Cause Crisis In South Texas
In 2012 Lackland Air Force base was temporarily used as an emergency shelter when the numbers of children caught crossing the border jumped sharply, leaving the Federal Government scrambling to find adequate bed space.
Since then, their numbers have continued to grow. According to reports, some 60,000 unaccompanied children and teens are expected this year – up from about 6,560 in 2011.
