DFW Teen Amputees Taking Colorado Ski Trip
GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - More than a dozen teens are boarding a plane to Colorado on Monday for a special ski trip. Those 14 teenagers are all amputees, and they are ready to conquer the slopes thanks to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas and American Airlines.
The hospital has been doing this for the past 33 years.
Before embarking on the five-day skiing adventure, the teenagers will first visit the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, which will outfit them with all of the proper ski equipment.
Mabeth Diaz is a 15-year-old sophomore at Jesuit College Prep in Dallas. He lost his right leg after an ATV crash when he was 11 years old. "It was difficult at first, but I got used to it," Diaz explained, "and just kind of adapted to snow and which foot to use correctly and which foot to put more pressure on."
The teens are being sent off in style. When the plane taxis out to the runway at DFW International Airport on Monday, it will be given a water cannon salute.
