DFW Could See New Rules For HOV Lanes
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Anyone who drives the highways in North Texas knows just how clogged those arteries can get. But transportation officials on Thursday could take a big step toward changing your commute. Right now, drivers are trying to manuever through construction. When it is complete, the manuevering will be in and out of HOV lanes.
The Regional Transportation Council is expected to vote Thursday on the rules for managed toll lanes throughout North Texas. One of the biggest changes for motorists will deal with vehicles carrying three or more occupants. Lanes for three-plus vehicles will be phased in over time.
The plan is to allow single-occupancy vehicles on the managed lanes. But those vehicles, and two-occupant vehicles, will have to pay the full rate.
Special toll tags will be required for three-plus cars, so that the managed lane equipment knows which vehicles have been registered to carry more passengers. The plan is to start this is 2016.
Meanwhile, the North Central Texas Council of Governments has invited motorists to participate in a survey. They want input on which roadways are the most congested. The survey is open until Friday.
