OXNARD (105.3 The Fan) - Part of my 1-on-1 conversation with Dez Bryant, in which the Cowboys star receiver reflects on his JUGS Machine insanity and the "dumb-@$$'' media response to my coverage of it.
I tweeted a video of Dez following up a full practice by challenging himself at the machine, attacking the machine, making catches first from 10 yards away, but then marching up closer to an almost-dangerous five yards away, with the ball coming at him at a too-high 60 MPH.
The full video (with me demonstrating that after gauging the distance and speed, he actually fielded some of the bullets) has gone viral, with more than 150,000 views on Instagram. It's also going nuts on Twitter with 3,500 views thanks to Bleacher Report — though unfortunately, Bleacher Report edited the footage to make it appear as though all Dez accomplished in the lengthy and demanding post-practice workout was to drop a pass. The tagline (of course): "Dez Dropped It.''
"Right, right,'' Bryant said after I explained the circumstance to him. "But what (Bleacher Report's) dumb-ass don't understand is the speed level was sky-high. About 60. (And five yards away from the JUGS machine instead of a slower speed from 10 yards). Everybody can do it with concentration. If it was set on the regular level I woulda caught all of 'em. But that's not the purpose of the drill. But I guess before their dumb-@$$ decides — you can write 'dumb-@$$' three times — before they decide they want to make a joke, they need to get all the facts before they come after somebody.''
Context, I noted. "Yeah, but it's all good, my man,'' Bryant said. "I don't too much give a damn about what they're talking about. Just check me out this year. That's it.''
I suggest to Dez, as I have before, that maybe he does care too much about his critics. No no,'' he said. "I'm just focusing in the things I need to focus on: My team and myself. Just trying to get us back. I don't give too much of a damn about anything else. Once I'm throwing up that 'X' in the end zone, that's all anybody's gonna give a damn about — including Bleacher Report.''
