Dewhurst Opposes Debt Agreement

AUSTIN (AP) - Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who is running for the U.S. Senate, blasted the debt ceiling deal reached in Washington.

Dewhurst said the agreement does not go far enough in cutting federal spending. The lieutenant governor announced last month that he is running to replace U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, entering a crowded field of conservative Republican candidates.

In a statement released Monday, Dewhurst said he supported efforts to cut more spending, cap the federal budget and pass a balanced budget amendment.

Dewhurst deplored a commission created by the deal to make decisions about future budget cuts. He said Washington needed leadership, not another commission.

Democrats and Republicans struggled for weeks to negotiate a bill to raise the debt ceiling to avoid defaulting on the nation's loans.
