Despite The 'Great' Series, Mavs Still Lost
DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) -- Maybe I'm a sore loser, but I don't know why anybody would want to be a good loser.
I understand the brilliance that was this series between the Spurs and the Mavs, which ended in a Game 7 blowout.
I appreciate the chess match between two top-tier coaches and the effort the Mavericks gave despite being clearly overmatched by a superior opponent.
Even the nuances of the role players giving so much more than they were expected -- I'm looking at you DeJuan Blair and Devin Harris.
You can look at the final outcome and the two teams hugging and chatting it up on the court and say, man those teams respect each other.
But all I see is a series winner and a series loser. And it sucks to be on the side that lost.
I think the Spurs are a team that thinks the Mavs shouldn't have even been that close, and the Mavs are a simple fly on the stud horses butt that needs to be swatted away. More of an annoyance than a valiant opponent.
I think they are great actors, and when the game was over they went out there to give the Mavs players lip service and pats on the back, but ultimately they were doing it for show.
They knew they were better, and when they got to the locker room, I bet those sentiments seeped out through the room.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Mavs played miles above their head in the series and that if you played it 20 games, you'd have an even split.
But the Mavs lost gas, the Spurs bench is deeper and the better team clearly won.
My biggest problem is that I see a really old roster with little young depth.
Sure Monte Ellis has it all, but who is going to help him?
Dirk gave what he could and will drift into a third role if the Mavs are lucky to land a big name in the post this offseason.
But who is going to help those two guys? Vince loves the game, and gives everything he has. I appreciate his effort no matter the situation, but we need another scorer desperately and he isn't the third guy we need.
But all of these problems are for another day. We can't fix the team yet. Right now, we can just sit at the bar and say man that series was great. Or be pissed that it didn't turn out better.
