Deputies Cleared In Shooting Death Of Colorado Murder Suspect

WISE COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) -- A Wise County grand jury has cleared the deputies involved in the March shooting death of a murder suspect on the run from Colorado.

28-year old Evan Ebel, who was suspected of murdering Colorado Corrections chief Tom Clements, was initially pulled over by Montague County Sheriff's Deputy James Boyd on March 21.

As Boyd approached the vehicle, Ebel fired four shots at the deputy, striking him once in the head. Ebel then led police on a chase that ended in a crash and gunfire outside of Decatur.

Per protocol, the Texas Rangers investigated the officer related shooting. A grand jury ruled that the Wise County Sheriff's deputies acted correctly in the gunfight that ultimately killed Ebel.

"They trained and trained and trained hoping they'd never need to use that training," said Wise County Sheriff David Walker. "With this unfortunate incident, they needed their training and they did exactly what they were trained to do. And at the end of the day, they went home to their families."

The El Paso County sheriff's office compared shell casings in Colorado and Wise County and determined that the same weapon was used in both instances.

Deputy Boyd made a full recovery and has since returned to work. He is scheduled to throw out the first pitch at the Texas Rangers game on July 19.
