RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - A military veteran, a police officer in Richardson and now James Schumann is in the fight for his life.

It all started with a bump.

"I was like man, it's nothing," said Schumann.

But that "nothing" would soon spiral into an advanced case of testicular cancer.

"It's scary. I have two kids. What am I going to do about that? I'm not even 40 yet. Everything is just a little scary," said Schumann.

In the coming weeks, it would only get more terrifying for Schumann.

After his first surgery, doctors discovered a serious infection that would lead to another surgery.

"I thought I was in the clear. This isn't supposed to happen. I'm supposed to be over here, not taking a step back," said Schumann.

But Detective Victor Diaz was not going to let his fellow officer take a step back in his recovery nor watch him lose focus.

"James is the kind of guy who, he's always looking out for other guys and he'll never ask for help," said Diaz.

With mounting bills from his hospital stay and having spent weeks out of work, Diaz started a Go-Fund-Me account to help his brother in blue.

"It's tough. It hits close to home when it somebody you know," said Diaz.

Schumann is overwhelmed by the support and hopes it will help him soon add "survivor" to his already accomplished life resume.

"It's a brotherhood. (It) doesn't matter if you bleed blue or bleed green," said Schumann.

Doctors told Schumann after he is released from the hospital, he will start chemotherapy.

To help Officer James Schumann, a Go-Fund-Me account has been set up here.
