Denton Mayoral Candidate Arrested For Felony Bribery
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Former Denton mayoral candidate Bob Clifton was arrested Tuesday on a felony bribery charge that alleges Clifton told Mayor Mark Burroughs that he would pull his name from last spring's race for an undisclosed amount of money.
A grand jury filed the indictment Monday and Clifton was arrested Tuesday in Corinth. According to the Denton County Sheriff's Office, Clifton is being held in the county jail on a felony bribery charge and tampering with a government record, a misdemeanor.
According to the indictment document, Burroughs reported Clifton to authorities after the 70-year-old asked for money in return for withdrawing from the city's mayoral race. Burroughs, who won the race handedly, declined to comment.
The second misdemeanor charge, documents reveal, is because Clifton falsely claimed he lived in the city of Denton. Arrest records have Clifton listed as living in the 1500 block of Cedar Elm in Corinth.
Clifton is being held in the Denton County Jail with a $6,000 bond.
