Denton County Sheriff's K-9 Found Shot To Death
DENTON COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - A Denton County Sheriff's K-9 was found to have been shot to death after going missing from his handler's backyard more than two weeks ago.
On Thursday, the department received a call from a county resident who says that he shot the dog as it was chasing and threatening his livestock.
When a cold front moved through the Wylie on Thursday, December 20, 2012, a gate to the handler's backyard was found open. The officer's dog, Chico, and a family Labrador went missing. The yellow lab was found injured in rural Collin County near the northern part of Lake Ray Hubbard. But Chico remained missing.
The shooter cooperated fully with police and helped deputies unbury the animal. No charges are expected to be filed in the shooting.
Chico was a Belgin Malinois, an all tan, short-coated dog, with distinctive black mask markings on his face (looks similar to a German Shepherd). He had been with the department since 2009 and was considered a deputy. The department will purchase another dog with money that Chico helped seize.
The department will hold a service for Chico on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in front of the main building of the Denton County Sheriff's Office.
