Denton County Russell Terrier One Of Nation's Top Dogs

LANTANA (CBSDFW.COM) - When a Denton County woman adopted a Russell Terrier, she didn't know he'd become such a star.

In five months, "Bodie" went from ordinary dog to Grand Champion.

"I know. I just can't believe it. No one can!!" Barbie Sullivan said.

Sullivan, who lives in Lantana, wanted in a dog who was quiet and obedient.  "I don't like barking," Sullivan said.

A friend put her in touch with a Russell Terrier breeder in Arkansas who offered her a three-year-old Russell Terrier named "Bodie."

The breeder had just one request. "Well, she said, 'Would you mind showing him?' To promote the breed. I said, 'Okay,'" Sullivan said.

Their first show was in Dallas last July. "Went down there and he won every day," Sullivan said with a look of amazement.

Barbie Sullivan had never shown a dog before. A friendly judge took her aside.  "He goes, 'Have you shown a dog before? And, I said no. He said you have to go take handling classes. I said, 'Oh. Okay," she said.

Four more shows and five months later, Bodie was a Grand Champion. He is now the fourth ranked Russell Terrier in the Country.

And, he is now headed to the "big dog" of all dog shows - the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York.

Sullivan has only seen it on TV before.  "Shoot yes. Yeah. I'm nervous," Sullivan said.

Bodie? Not so much.  "I think he kind of knows he's on. You either have it or you don't. You put him up there on the stand and he looks around like yeah. I'm cute," she said.

Barbie Sullivan, who only wanted a quiet companion,is giving Bodie his time to shine in the spotlight.  He is one lucky dog.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is slated for February 11 and 12 in New York.
