Denton County Reports First West Nile Death
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The Denton County Health Department on Tuesday morning reported its first death this year associated with the West Nile virus. The patient was a Denton resident in his 90s who had an underlying health condition, the department said in a news release. No additional information was provided.
Denton County has 62 confirmed cases of the West Nile virus so far this year. The health department reminded residents that very few of those who are infected experience a severe form of the illness. Elderly individuals and those with underlying medical conditions -- both of which applied to this latest death -- are at an increased risk. Most infections occur in those over 50 years old.
The Denton County Health Department has teamed up with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program to educate the area's older residents about the dangers of the West Nile virus. Call 940-383-1508 for more information on this program.
