Pilar Sanders Arrested On Family Violence Charge
PROSPER (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Pilar Sanders, the wife of former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Deion Sanders, has been arrested by police in Prosper on a family violence charge. A listing of inmates from the Collin County Sheriff's Office shows that Ms. Sanders was taken into custody on Monday night for a charge of assault family violence. Her bond was set at $264.
Deion Sanders took to the popular social media site Twitter on Monday to talk about the domestic issue with his estranged wife. At about 5:00 p.m. on Monday, he tweeted, "Pray for me and my kids now! They just witnessed their mother and a friend jump me in my room. She's going to jail n I'm pressing charges!"
Sanders then also tweeted a picture of himself and his two sons filling out a police report.
Enough people noticed the star's series of tweets (@DeionSanders has about 374,000 followers) that his Twitter feed and his name became trending topics on the site. Sanders spoke with CBS 11 News reporter Jay Gormley on the phone shortly after the last tweet. Sanders said that he was jumped by his wife and a female friend, and that his 10-year-old and 12-year-old sons witnessed the scene.
Deion Sanders also accused Pilar of faking an injury and saying that she needed to go to a hospital. Sanders told CBS 11 News that police planned to arrest Pilar. Authorities in Prosper did not initially comment on the issue, but later released a statement that said, "There was a response by Prosper Police at Mr. Sanders' request to his home on a domestic disturbance. Mr. Sanders filed a complaint and the complaint is being investigated."
The arrest came later on Monday night.
Sanders still shares his 29,000 square foot, $21 million home with his soon-to-be ex-wife. Court documents show that Ms. Sanders filed a motion on April 12, seeking a protective order against her husband. The terms of the motion were not immediately available. The couple's divorce case is set for trial on September 10.
Sanders attended an event for the Nancy Lieberman Foundation on Monday night. When asked to comment on the earlier events concerning Pilar, the former Cowboys star only said, "I'm here for Nancy right now. I'm here for Nancy."
Lieberman quickly came to Deion's side. "This is the most unbelievable man/father I've every been around my whole life. He's never done anything to hurt anybody and he doesn't deserve this. This is the best daddy I've ever been around."
Sanders spent four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys from 1995 to 1999, playing on the team that won Super Bowl XXX. He's best known for being a two-sport athlete, playing major league baseball and in the NFL for a number of consecutive seasons. After a brief comeback to football in 2004 with the Baltimore Ravens, he retired from sports in 2005, becoming an analyst for the NFL Network.
