Court Upholds Sanders Prenup
MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - The divorce drama between former Dallas Cowboys star Deion Sanders and his estranged wife Pilar returned to the Collin County Courthouse in McKinney on Wednesday morning.
The hearing was scheduled to address the couple's prenuptial agreement. Pilar Sanders wanted the agreement to be thrown out, but Wednesday afternoon Judge Ray Wheless ruled the prenup will stand.
According to divorce lawyers it's not easy to get a prenuptial agreement tossed out. Pilar Sanders would have had to prove fraud, or that she was forced into signing the agreement.
In court Wednesday Bill Roberts, the attorney representing Pilar Sanders in 1999, said that Deion Sanders agreed to give her an additional $100,000 in a "signing bonus" for their prenuptial agreement.
Deion claimed that Pilar requested the bonus in order to sign the prenuptial agreement. Roberts said that he was present when the couple entered into the agreement.
The agreement was signed on April 19, 1999. The couple married two days later.
"This is greed. That's all it is," said Deion Sanders during a break at the Wednesday hearing.
The judge granted Deion Sanders temporary custody of his two sons back in May, while the couple's daughter is staying with Pilar. The football star gets to stay in their Prosper mansion and Pilar is required to remain at least 500 yards away at all times. Deion Sanders had also been told to pay his estranged wife $10,500 each month for child support. That amount was decreased to $2,500 after two months, and raised back to $4,500 in a court order on Tuesday.
There had been reports that Deion was not making his child support payments, but the former Cowboys player denied that allegation. "No payment has ever been missed," he said. "Another lie told."
Deion Sanders told a group of reporters Wednesday Pilar was doing this because she wanted more money to keep up with the lifestyle she had when living with him.
The court is currently trying to discuss arbitration between the Sanders', who have been going through a very public and bitter divorce.
