Deceased Teen Suspect Identified In Christmas Day Manhunt, Shooting
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) -- Authorities have identified the suspect responsible for a Christmas Day manhunt and shooting in Grand Prairie that left two officers wounded and the teenage suspect dead.
Mansfield resident Peyton Cole Barbour, 16, was identified by the Dallas County Medical Examiner on Thursday as the suspect.
Barbour was the subject of a near 10-hour manhunt that began on Christmas morning around 4:30 a.m. as officers attempted to make a routine traffic stop near Joe Pool Lake.
After a short pursuit, Barbour left his vehicle and fired multiple shots at officers. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect once.
The suspect fled, prompting authorities to establish a perimeter and call in a DPS helicopter and K-9 units for assistance.
Around 2 p.m., officers located Barbour and approached him, prompting the teenager to fire a handgun at officers. Two officers were shot -- one in the hand, one in the foot. They have since been treated and released from Dallas Methodist Hospital.
Officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times, resulting in his death.
"The thing we wanted to prevent most was the suspect getting into someone's home, taking someone hostage," said Steve Dye, Grand Prairie Police Chief. "For that very reason, we unfortunately had to use deadly force as we could not allow him to get back in the neighborhood and possibly do that."
Residents in the area were warned of the imminent danger during the manhunt and were advised to use caution if they left their homes.
Barbour was a sophomore student at Mansfield Lake Ridge High School. The district plans to have grief counselors available for students and staff who may need assistance when they return from the winter break.
Mansfield ISD released a statement on Thursday.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the student's family during this tragic time. We are also thankful that according to new reports, the police officers injured have since been released from the hospital."
